Leh Ladakh Road Trip 2026: The Only Guide You'll Need

From the Manali-Leh highway's impossible switchbacks to the stillness of Pangong Lake at dawn — a Ladakh road trip is unlike any other journey in India. Here is everything you need to plan it right.

The Journey Is the Destination There are roads in the world that exist purely for the experience of being on them. The Manali-Leh Highway is one of those roads. Five high mountain passes. Raw geology exposed in walls of ochre, burgundy, and grey stone. Valleys so wide you lose perspective. And every so often, the unmistakable blue-green glint of a mountain lake between peaks. Ladakh is not just a destination — it is the closest most of us will come to another planet while still standing on Earth.

Best Time to Visit The Manali-Leh Highway typically opens in late May and closes by late October. Peak season is July to September when all passes are clear. June and September offer thinner crowds and dramatic light — often the best combination for photographers. The Srinagar-Leh Highway opens earlier, usually by mid-April.

Two Main Routes Manali to Leh (479 km, ~2 days): The classic approach, crossing five passes — Rohtang (3,978 m), Baralacha La (4,890 m), Nakee La (4,739 m), Lachung La (5,079 m), and Tanglang La (5,359 m). Plan an overnight break at Jispa or Sarchu. Srinagar to Leh (434 km, ~2 days): A more gradual ascent passing Kargil, the Drass Valley, and Lamayuru Monastery. Rich in history and a natural pair with a Kashmir extension.

Essential Permits Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for Indian nationals visiting Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri. Available online or at Leh DC Office. Protected Area Permit (PAP): Required for foreign nationals — obtained through a registered travel agency. Rohtang Pass Permit: Required for all vehicles, booked online 24 hours in advance. Vetesta Holidays handles all permit logistics as part of your package.

Altitude & Acclimatisation Leh sits at 3,524 metres. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a genuine risk if you arrive by air and immediately exert yourself. Standard protocol: rest for 24-48 hours, drink three litres of water daily, avoid alcohol on day one. Diamox (acetazolamide) is widely recommended — consult your doctor before travel.

Must-See Stops Pangong Tso: The lake that made Ladakh famous — 134 km long, straddling India and China, changing from blue to green to turquoise across the day. Sunrise here is genuinely among India's best natural experiences. **Nubra Valley:** Cross Khardung La (5,359 m) to reach a broad valley of sand dunes, Bactrian camels, and apricot orchards. The contrast of desert and Himalayan peaks in the same frame is surreal. Leh Palace & Shanti Stupa: The 17th-century palace modelled on Lhasa's Potala, the hilltop Shanti Stupa, and the old market's prayer-flag-lined lanes reward a full day of exploration. Magnetic Hill: A gravitational optical illusion 30 km from Leh where vehicles appear to roll uphill on their own.
